James graduated from Colgate University in 1987 with a degree in political science and economics and earned his J.D., cum laude, from Cardozo Law school in 1990. He has worked at and with some of the top firms in New York City, and founded Sarna & Associates, PC in 1996, with offices in New York City and Rockland County.

James has served as counsel to debtors, creditors, receivers, and trustees, and has served as a trustee or counsel to the trustee in a number of liquidating cases.

James is active in local government, serving as a Trustee and then as the Acting Justice of the Village of Upper Nyack and is active as a soccer coach and outdoor enthusiast.
